Http Cookies Explained

Writen by Andrew Nielsen

In this article we describe – without getting too technical – what HTTP cookies are. This includes their application, areas of concern and their alternatives.

An HTTP cookie is a small piece data. This data is sent by a web server when a user loads a page and then sent back unchanged to the server every time the user accesses the server. The purpose of this is to allow the server to identify the individual users requesting web pages from the server.

Cookies were invented to allow web servers to track and maintain information about the contents of users' electronic shopping carts. Cookies allowed the server to uniquely identify which user was adding or removing items from a shopping cart and thereby to keep track of individual shopping carts. Without cookies, each interaction with the web server had to be treated as a separate event, and there was no obvious or accurate connection to a user's previous actions.

Today, cookies are also used to keep track of user site preferences and user behavior across multiple websites. The latter is used primarily for advertising and involves tracking the user across multiple websites and thereby targeting ads to the user. Even when a user visits different websites served by different web servers, there may be ads on such websites which are served from one server. This way, the server providing the ads will be able to track the user.

A cookie can contain any (small) amount of data and will most often contain a string randomly generated by the server. There is thus no personal information stored in the cookie itself. The server may however store personal information and user preferences if the user types these in on the website. The cookie then allows the server to associate the information stored in the server with the user, when the user visits the website and the cookie is sent by the browser to the server.

Most browsers allow the user to decide if he or she will accept a cookie from a web server. If the user declines, this disables the functionality on the website utilizing cookies. If a website has implemented an electronic shopping cart using cookies, it will thus not be possible for the user to make a purchase without accepting the cookie.

Cookies may have an expiration date in which case the browser will not send the cookie to the server after expiration. Some cookies are defined as non persistent, in which case they are deleted when the browser is closed. Also, users may manually delete all or selected cookies.

While the data in the cookie itself is not personal and a server can only acquire personal information if the user explicitly discloses it, cookies are seen as a cause for concern over data privacy. The main reason for this is the tracking of user behavior over multiple websites. For this reason, cookies have been subject to legislation in United States, United Kingdom and other countries.

There are other areas of concern. If multiple users use the same computer, user profile and browser they will appear as one user to the web server. Also, cookies may be stolen, tampered with or an attacker may listen to the connection between a server and user and thereby snoop the cookie.

There are alternatives to using cookies each with their own drawbacks. One alternative involves tracking the user by the IP address from which the server receives the request for a webpage. This is inaccurate as multiple users may share the same IP address or proxy server. Other alternatives include HTTP authentication and embedding of information into URLs.

In this article we described what cookies are and what they may be used for. We have seen why they are a cause for concern over data privacy and we have touched on the subject of alternatives.

Optimizing The Java Programming Language

Writen by Gautam Dev

Improving JavaBean Coding

The first thing I have is to improve the coding of any JavaBean. We all know any java bean has members and lot of getters and setters. But for large number of member variables it becomes tedious to create the getters and the setters. The Java api can easily make it part of the jdk so that the getters and the setters are generated automatically. There can be a marker interface which any JavaBean class can implement and that will tell the compiler to generate the getter and setter code during compilation process. Of course, if you have any specialized getter or setter, that will override the system generated ones.

Optimizing Garbage Collection

My second idea is on garbage collection. Right now the JVM runs the garbage collection thread and automatically cleans up memory for objects whose reference count is zero. But some of these checks can be achieved during compile time. If some object is created within a method and it is assigned to local variable only during compilation, the compiler can automatically generate garbage collection code when the method exits. This will not happen if the object is returned or attached to some non-local variable. This will make the job of the garbage collector thread much easier and will result in a faster program.

One can even think of giving back the delete functionality optionally. This will result in less work for the compiler and definitely for the JVM. If the devloper is not sure if to use the delete functionality, he may leave it to the compiler or the JVM. For example, the developer did a mistake of calling delete on the same reference twice. This will result in MemoryAlreadyDeletedException (something like that) or plain old NullPointerException. Unlike in C++ world, developer can just take the delete out altogether, and the problem will disappear.

Is The Ipod Nano The Right Mp3 Player For Your Personal Music Needs

Writen by Tim Gorman

When it comes to electronic gadgets and multimedia, Apple has long been the leader. They have a real talent for producing products that are user-friendly, price-effective and space-efficient. This is particularly the case in the MP3 players market, where Apple's iPods reign supreme. For those with big budgets, there's the iPod Photo and Video versions, and at the cheap end of the market there's the iPod Shuffle. If you fall somewhere in-between, then the iPod Nano is probably the right choice for you.

The iPod Photo and Video versions certainly have the biggest disk size of all the iPod models, but the iPod Nano still contains the outstanding features that make iPod the undisputed leader in the industry. You can choose what hard drive size you want in your iPod Nano, starting with 1GB (240 songs), moving through 2GB (500 songs) and right up to 4GB (1,000 songs). The cheapest model starts at around $149.

Although the iPod shuffle comes with a much cheaper price tag, it's also lacking in some of the main features that make the iPod Nano so outstanding. You can still listen to your favorite music on the iPod shuffle, but it's completely random - you have no control over which song plays next. The iPod Nano you can control the songs in any way you choose, even though it doesn't have the disk space of the bigger iPod systems.

The iPod Nano is also remarkably sleek and stylish, only being roughly as thick as a pen or pencil. So it's still small and manageable like the iPod Shuffle, which makes it great for portability when you want to visit the gym or go for a run.

If there's one thing that works against the iPod Nano, it's that it suffers from a lack of durability. The bigger versions of iPod are much the same. The iPod Nano can probably be taken on a run or to the gym more times than an iPod Video or Photo, but chances are it will still start to fade out quicker than an iPod Shuffle. This problem happens with all electronic devices at some point, but if you're paying a higher price you naturally want to experience less glitches.

This problem isn't unique to iPods - it happens to all MP3 players at some point. They also all tend to suffer from similar issues such as too bulky, not enough disk space, and lacking in durability. Still, when everything else is the same, it's usually a good idea to stick with the industry leader.

Apple Ipod Why Apple Dominates The Mobile Mp3 Player Market

Writen by Donny Duncan

Noticing a growing market for mobile MP3 players, Apple released the original iPod in late 2001, and it was quickly destined to be a huge success. It was exactly what people wanted.. It had a simple interface, it had a large storage capacity, and it was extremely attractive and recognizable. It was only compatible with the Apple Macintosh though, which extremely limited their sales possibilities.

The iPod did end up driving up Apple Macintosh sales though, since a small percentage of people actually migrated over to the Macintosh computer just so they could use an Ipod. It wasn't enough to drive sales of the iPod up though, Apple needed a bigger market, they needed the Windows market, which was (and still is) much larger than the Macintosh market.

In 2003 Apple released a new iPod that came with iTunes, which was compatible with both Macintosh and Windows systems. This was when the real explosion of sales occurred, since so many more people could use them with the Windows platform.

The iPod Keys to Success

  • Simple Interface - The Apple iPod has an extremely simple interface, needing only a few seconds of use to be able to master it.

  • Large capacity - The current regular ipod has a 30 or 60 gigabyte storage capacity, which 30 gigabytes equals about 6000 songs. Even the smaller versions have a larger than normal capacity.

  • It's visually attractive - They made it look very sexy, appealing to just about everyone, and is now extremely recognizable.

  • Windows and Mac compatibility - When they crossed over to the windows market, they more than tripled their market, literally reaching anyone that owned a computer

These are the things that really make the Apple iPod dominate the mobile MP3 player market, reaching over 70% of the market share. Apple never simply wanted to dominate the market with one product though, they're still releasing new products at an alarming rate, each of which are doing extremely well.

  • iPod Mini - This was Apple's first iPod spinoff, attempting to appeal to a younger market, being the first to come in different color, and it was much smaller than the original iPod. It didn't have as large of a capacity as the original, but it was still large enough to hold a lot of songs.

  • iPod Nano - Apple retired the Mini, and came out with the Nano, which was even smaller than the Mini, at about a quarter of an inch thick. The nano has exploded onto the market with it's extremely small size, and has capacities of 1, 2, and 4 gigabytes.

  • iPod Video - This was a replacement for the basic iPod, and the most recent addition to the iPod family of products. the iPod Video not only plays songs like the original, but plays video files as well, and they bumped up the capacity to 30 and 60 gigabytes.

  • iPod Shuffle - The iPod Shuffle is Apples first attempt at the flash drive market, since all of their other products have spinning hard drives. The shuffle replaces the user interface with just a few buttons, and prides itself on the "shuffle" feature, after it's name. It is the smallest of the iPod line, at about the size of a usb memory stick, and has capacities of 512 megabytes and 1 gigabyte, appealing to those that don't need much space and want something extremely small.

The iPod has created a whole slew of other markets as well, from audio companies implementing ipod connectivity support in car radios, clothes companies creating ipod pockets, and other third party companies creating tons of ipod accessories, like carrying cases, protective sleeves, docking stations, the list goes on and on.

It's no wonder why the iPod dominates the market, with Apple's ingenious marketing strategies, great features, and appealing looks of their products, the iPod is destined to dominate the MP3 player market for some time.

Pleasing Images And Artificial Intelligence Theory

    Writen by Lance Winslow

Much work is currently being done in the scientific community to fuse non-human or artificial intelligence into a mold, which will be accepted by their human counterparts. You might understand that a soon to be or someday inferior human may be a little upset working along side an advanced robot or artificial intelligent android.

How the android looks will be a big factor, its facial expressions will also be important as well. One might even consider the types of visual images that are pleasing to humans now. Think about the visual imagery used in advertising today, lots of research goes into this, because non-pleasing advertising will not sell products or services.

The future of these psychological truths will be evident also in Artificial Intelligent Robot Androids mimicking human behavior and adjusting to personalities. Thus a whole new set of research papers are now re-affirming what is now being discussed in advertising images and its relation to the future.

At MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Cal-Tech, Texas A & M, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and so many other schools they are considering this. A recent study from the University of Riverside in California not only confirms advertising theory, but says the exact same thing about online images and computer human interfaces for online marketing, with all the empirical proof which cannot be put into any small and tight well-written article on the subject. Perhaps you will consider all this in 2006.

    Cd Replication And Mastering

    Writen by Thomas Morva

Ever since the CD, or compact disc, was first introduced, it has become the primary medium for storing digital data, especially digital audio. Today, CDs are the standard playback format, especially for commercial audio recordings. The widespread use of CDs today is due to their versatility, speed, ease of use and low cost of producing large quantities of original disc copies.

The process of producing large quantities of CDs is called replication. CD replication is the process used in the recording industry to create and release music albums by performing artists.

How CD Replication and Mastering Works

In CD replication, every CD made is an exact copy of the original CD. Essentially, a replicated CD is in itself also a master copy of the original.

The process of replication requires a number of steps such as mastering, injection molding, metallizing and spin coating.

"Mastering" means making the original master disc from which all copies will be replicated. This process entails all the necessary adjustments and finishing touches on the songs or tracks before they can be replicated. The original master is then used to create the glass master. Afterwards, stamps are made from this glass master.

High-tech injection molding is then used by these stamps to generate identical copies of the original master disc. Once the preliminary master copy is made, it must undergo finalization. During this stage, the disc is coated with reflective aluminum and lacquer to help protect its surface and preserve the data stored. The discs are now ready for label printing.

Because of the speed, ease and cost efficiency of CD replication, record labels are able to meet a high demand for CDs. But this technique is not limited to the recording industry. In fact, CD replication and mastering is readily available to the public. There are CD replication services now on hand. With the proper knowledge and equipment, you can even do your own CD replication and mastering.

CD Mastering provides detailed information on CD Mastering, CD Mastering Engineers, CD Mastering Facilities, CD Mastering Software and more. CD Mastering is affiliated with Stand Alone CD Duplicators.

    Buying Digital Camera Batteries

    Writen by Steve Gargin

A digital camera battery is probably the most important digital camera accessory. Some digital cameras can consume power at an alarming rate, providing no more than a few hours of continuous shooting time before the battery is drained. Other cameras are renowned for the long life of their digital camera battery which allows users to snap away with barely a thought to power consumption. It is important to know how you intend to use your camera and what type of battery it needs.

There are two types of digital camera battery. The most widely available digital camera battery is a standard AA-size battery. The other type of digital camera battery is a rechargeable battery that is made by the manufacturer, otherwise known as a proprietary battery.

A proprietary digital camera battery offers the advantage of being lighter and more compact, but they are substantially more expensive, making the prospect of buying one or two backup sets much less appealing.

The alkaline AA-size digital camera battery usually has a very short life - less than an hour in extreme cases - when used in a digital camera. This type of battery makes an acceptable emergency backup, especially if you are travelling with your camera. However, the Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) digital camera battery can be used instead of the alkaline ones with a charger and this rechargeable NiMH digital camera battery has a substantially longer life at an affordable price.

Another type of AA-size battery is the non-rechargeable Lithium batteries and rechargeable Nickel Cadmium (NiCD) batteries. The lithium digital camera battery has a superior life to alkaline AA's and offers good cold-weather performance but their price and non-rechargeable nature make them less useful than rechargeable NiMH batteries. It is also important to ensure that your camera can take a lithium digital camera battery. On the other hand the NiCD digital camera battery offers the advantage of retaining their charge while unused, unlike NiMH cells, but have shorter lives and need to be discharged completely before recharging which can be extremely inconvenient.

The LCD screen of a digital camera is responsible for consuming the most power from a digital camera battery so it is worth only using the LCD when necessary to help conserve the battery life. Always try to carry at least one backup set of batteries, especially if you plan on being away from power outlets for an extended period of time. The universally-available alkaline AA-size battery can make a convenient emergency backup if your regular digital camera battery fails.

How Increased Competition Has Led To Advances In The Ipod

    Writen by Gregg Hall

The iPod has been around since October 2001. This is hard to believe. It doesn't seem like it's been around for that long already. Over the last five years they continue to come out with a new and improved model of the iPod. Recently they have released the iPod video, which has also been a great success.

    Development

The iPod was developed because there was a lack of quality digital music players on the market. Other digital devices such as cameras, camcorders, and organizers were available and were selling quite well; nest was the digital music player. After developing and releasing the Apple iPod was the release of the models for the Mac and Window users. This increased the sales of the iPod even more. The continued advancement and improvement of the iPod was necessary to keep customers interested and sales up. The iPod did just that. It kept the leading position in the market and is recorded at selling over 42 million units since its release.

    Competition

Competition is another reason each company keeps improving their design. In 2005 a new and improved iPod was released with a color screen. This color screen was a first in the iPod evolution. Shortly after this release the Samsung Company announced that they were going to release and even better version. This competition led to the fifth generation of the iPod. This fifth generation is better known as the video iPod. Ipod Nano was another top seller at this time.

    Video iPod

This new video iPod is capable of playback, video playing and better organizational features. You can get the iPod video in both 30 GB and 60 GB models. It also has the ability to play at a much higher resolution than previously seen. A 16 bit screen and the capability to display all kinds of videos are a few other features. You can get your video iPod in either black or white. Some of the other new features is it has a world clock, a stop watch, screen lock application, smaller earphones, a small slip case, and fire wire cable.

The new video iPod also has smaller dimensions than previous iPods. Even though the dimensions are smaller, the screen size has increased. The video iPod is also thinner too. Hard to believe that it is capable of doing more things, but they make it smaller and thinner than before. The battery life was also increased to 16 to 20 hours. Just remember that if you are watching videos it will use the battery life up quite a bit faster.

It is amazing to see how quickly things can evolve. Look at the amazing things that have come just since the launching of the iPod five years ago. It's hard to imagine what they will come out with next, but I'm sure there will be something new for us to look forward too. There will always be that competition to be the best on the market.

Setting File Permissions On A Unix Server

    Writen by Charlie Cory

File permissions are one of the strengths that the Unix world has had over it's Windows contemporaries. Permissions are a means to control access to information on a computer, on a file by file basis. There are several layers of control, and these will be discussed below.

For the purpose of this series of tutorials, I have been using a free FTP program called Core FTP Lite to upload files to my server. I am using this program to describe my examples.

Ok, to begin, let's say that we have uploaded some files to a server.

We are discussing uploading scripts in general here, and certainly for many scripts, the creators may well specify certain 'permissions' that need to be set in order for the scripts to operate correctly. Let's take a look at a set of files on a server. In Core FTP Lite, the server files are shown in the right hand pane. Select one and then right click on the highlighted file.If you use a different FTP client, I expect that the layout will be very similar.

Run the mouse down to the bottom of the menu and select the item marked 'Properties'. Click on this option, and another dialog will appear.

You will see that the file in question (in this case a directory) is being shown in the 'File' field at the top of the screen.

What we are really interested in, is the tick boxes in the bottom half of the screen. These hold the file 'privileges' or 'permissions' for this file or directory.

There are three types of 'permissions' available.

    * User - which means the person signed on who is setting the permissions

    * Group - which means a specific group of users for whom access to the file has been granted

    * World - which means everyone.

Within these groups of users, there are 3 distinct types of permissions

    * Read - which means that permission to read a file, but not alter it or run it

    * Write - which means permission to write to a file and change it

    * Execute - which means permission to execute a file, which is important in the case of scripts for example.

Permissions are sometimes called by these names (read, write, execute) but are more commonly referred to using letters 'rwx'. In addition, permissions are sometimes referred to by a single number '755' for example. In the picture above, you will see a value box. This is the number being referred to. How is this number made up? Well let me explain.

    Read
    User 400

    Group 40

    World 4

    Write
    User 200

    Group 20

    World 2

    Execute
    User 100

    Group 10

    World 1

Each value for each setting is shown. Try them out by ticking them, and see the number in the 'Value' field change accordingly.

So, lets look at a real example

Can you see how the number 755 is made up? Add up the individual values from the value table and see.

So hopefully you can see, that setting file permissions with the right tool is not hard at all.

Charlie Cory worked or many years running a HelpDesk for a software house, and has experience in many operatng systems and technologies. The online aticle contains many pictures which help bring this tutorial to life.

Viruses Amp Spyware Id Be Willing To Bet That You Have Viruses Amp Spyware On Your Computer

    Writen by Frank Shrum

Hi, I started offering my services as a computer tune-up guy in my home town in order to further promote my dialup services.

Every since I started doing this it has proven to be a very profitable avenue of marketing but something else has made itself known to me in the process. Nearly every customer's computer that I work on has NO Virus Protector on it or the one they have is out of date by several months, NO spyware tools, and they have NO firewall of any kind and as a result the computers have so many viruses and spyware on them I can't get the computer to work properly until they are removed.

I have removed as many as 2000+ viruses & Trojans from one computer alone (a laptop). It took me several days of work to find them all and get them all off. Then when I got through with that I installed and ran a spyware tool and it found almost 500 pieces of spyware operating on the computer. WOW!

Most of the computers that I try to install internet access on are comparable to this. Although I haven't had any more with as many viruses as this one had the average computer, I have found, has as many as nearly 500 viruses as well as nearly 500 spyware on them, & sometimes more.

This is not because the people who own these computers are stupid rather it's because they are naive about how to maintain their computer in an appropriate manner.

The fact is no one is telling them in a manner that will convince them and thus compel them to learn this all important information.

Most people who have been on the internet for any length of time have been bombarded with scare ads telling them that their computer is infected and that they will fix it for them FOR A PRICE!

With this kind of fear sales tactics, people have become immune to them. They have seen so many of these fly by night companies try to scare them into buying their "Fix-All" software that they think that it's all just a joke and nothing that they have to worry about.

The fact is that ALL of the software that you need to both clean the viruses & spyware off of your computer and keep them off are available on the internet for free! YES! FREE!

Below I have listed a selection of software that I use to protect my computer and recommend for you to get and use to protect your computer from those who want to do your computer harm. I am only listing the ones which I use, therefore, I know that they work. If they work for me then they will work for you too.

Take note to the fact that these are not your only choices, do a Google search for these tools and you can find a whole slew of providers of these type tools, both free and pay for versions.

My favorite anti virus, anti spyware & firewall defense software list and where to get them.

    AVGFree
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 (I believe it is the best virus scanner) Free and paid for versions avail.

    Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html (Awesome) Donations accepted if you like it

    SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/index.html (Use with Spybot S&D) Donations accepted

    Kerio Personal Firewall
http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html (Free 30 day trial and then it reverts to a basic firewall without all of the extras which you can have if you buy it.)

These tools have been in operation on my computer for years and when I bought my new XP I implemented them on it too.

They have saved my computers & files from damaging attacks more times than I can count. Just the other day AVGFree found 10 viruses trying to get on my computer and stopped them all in one day of working on the internet.

Today, it seems, more viruses than ever before are being unleashed on the users of the internet! Don't let them get into your computer! Set up a good line of defense and by all means KEEP THEM UPDATED!

Note: If you decide to buy any of these products I do not reap any financial rewards for any of these pieces of software. The afore mentioned list is provided for you entirely because I believe that they are the best tools out there.

Now I will speak to the Internet Marketers among us.

It seems to me that every legitimate internet marketer on the internet should be telling every customer that they have about these tools and helping people keep their computers clean because if you think about it:

    1) You use the internet to market your wares and services to the public, right?

    2) You need people to be able to get on the internet to buy from you, right?

    3) If people's computers are full of viruses and spyware then they may be having trouble getting on the internet to buy from you,.....right?

Just think of how many more customers that you might have if all of the people in the world that have access to the internet, but can't make the best use of it because they are spending all of their time just trying to get on the internet so that they can see your ads & come to your web site to buy your goods & services, could finally see what you have to offer after they clean their computers of viruses and spyware.

It's only good business to try to help your potential customers fix this problem they have.

Think about it...If your potential customer is trying to open your web page so they can buy your goods and/or services and they have viruses and/or spyware bogging down their computers thus making your web pages download slow if they download at all... how many of them just give up on you and go somewhere else to buy what they want. You lose a sale and they leave your site, that won't load up on their computers, blaming you because you can't build a descent web site never thinking or knowing that it wasn't your fault and that the problem was living in their computer all the while.

If you were so mind to you could just put this report on your web site and/or in your newsletter and just let them know how to deal with this virus & spyware plague once and for all.

    G*d Bless Y'all from Texas,

    Computer Dos And Donts

    Writen by Phyllis Wasserman

Here are a few helpful pointers for your computer experience.

    DON'T

Store personal information on your computer or PDA. Stored data is always open to hackers. Consider storing passwords on CD's or disks that you keep locked in a box or closet.

Shop on-line without being sure of two safety features. Check the order page for the lock icon at the bottom. This way you know the system is encrypted and your personal data if transfered safely. The URL on the address bar should say "https", the "s" stands for secure.

Store credit card information on a website. It may be more convenient, but it's not safe.

Open or answer any unfamiliar e-mails. Just opening an email with an attachment, can add a worm to your computer. If you really think it might be from someone you know, hit reply and ask them to identify themselves. If that doesn't work, you know it's junk.

Fall for phishers. Phishing is a new scam. There are cyber crooks looking for information. They ask for your credit card numbers and social security information, phone numbers or even email addresses. Never respond to these emails.

Use obvious passwords. Don't use anything connected to your social security number. Don't use combinations of numbers and letters. Don't use anything with your mother's maiden name or your birth date.

    DO

    Use virus and spyware protection.

How To Download A Movie On Your Ipod A Step By Step Guide

    Writen by John Samuels

So everyone has heard of an Ipod by this point, and most people own one. However when it comes to actually taking advantage of all the features and functions an Ipod is capable of, we don't always have the necessary knowledge, nor detailed enough instructions to achieve what we desire.

I for example had quite a lot of trouble downloading movies onto my ipod, though I knew that without a doubt it was possible. So once I finally succeeded I thought it would be a good idea to take that information and put it into article form so that others might benefit. So here is my step by step guide on how to download movies on your ipod, it should make the process easy and achieveable.

First you will need to find somewhere to actually download the movies from in the first place, and usually this means some sort of subscriber website. I have included a link at the bottom of this article which should take you to a review of the two best movie and music download sites available at the moment.

The next step is of course to find the movie you want to watch on the subscriber site. Once you have found the desired movie, make sure you choose the Video Ipod/ Sony PSP download option. This is simply to ensure that you get the correct file type to be watched on your Ipod. Then download the file to a place on your computer, it is best to create a folder called IpodMovies or something similar so you will know exactly where they are.

Once the file has been completely downloaded to your computer, it is time to connect your Ipod to the computer via its USB cord. Open the Apple iTunes application. Select 'Add File to Library' from the 'File' menu in the iTunes application. Browse your computer for the video you previously downloaded and click 'Open.' Then Click 'Edit,' then click 'Preferences in the iTunes application. Once that is done click the 'iPod' tab, then click 'Videos,' and then 'Automatically update all videos.' Lastly, you should click 'OK.'

Itunes will then automatically copy the movie from your computer to your Ipod. Once this has been done all you need to do to play back your movies on your iPod is click 'Videos,' then click 'Movies'.

If all instructions above have been followed correctly you should have been able to successfully download a movie on your Ipod, and been able to watch it. As you can see, it is not a complicated process and you should be able to achieve this quite easily.

As mentioned above, one of the most important parts of this process is picking the right subscriber site. The wrong one will not have the selection you desire, and could end up costing you more than you are willing to pay if it charges download fees. So I have created a small page with links to two great Ipod sites which do not charge download fees and have a massive selection of movies. But don't take my word for it, check them out for yourself and pick the right one for you. Click here to check out my two favourite Ipod download sites.

Easy Howto Fix Your Registry Files

    Writen by Judith Brandy

Are you plagued by a computer system that slowing down to a crawl? How many "blue screens of death" have you seen in the last month? Is restarting your computer useless and lengthy? Well, before you toss the computer out the window with the latest in a plethora of DLL and "mystery" errors, it might be time to find out a little bit about your registry.

    So what is a registry?

Every Windows operating system has a registry which holds a wealth of information about your computer. You will find that after using your PC for a short length of time, it longer works the way it did when you first purchased it. It starts slowing down, hiccupping and giving you errors that you don't understand. Let's face it, Microsoft errors are not exactly user-friendly.

    How does it do that

Another way to look at the Windows registry is that it is a database which stores settings and options for the operating system for Windows 32-bit versions, 64-bit versions and Windows Mobile. It contains information and settings for all your hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to "Control Panel" settings, or file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry. Constant changing, addition and removal of software, changing user preferences and the like makes for registry errors which in turn slows your computer down and leads to those frustrating shutdowns, freeze-ups and harrassing errors.

Where do these errors come from?

Many of these errors are due in part to invalid entries that exist in your system registry, that might exist because of software you once used and are no longer using was not properly removed. Just by removing these invalid entries, you can significantly increase the performance of your PC.

So, how do you fix it?

Actually, nowadays it's pretty easy. There are tons of software on the market that allow you to clean-up and reconfigure your registry so that your computer acts like it did when you first took it out of the box. There are many automatic system utility software programs that range from shareware and freeware to low cost which allows you to clean up your registry. These include Registry Mechanic and Registry Fix.

So, before you toss out that laptop, try a registry fix. By the way, if you want links to good Registry fixing software that's both effective and inexpensive, visit The Writing Buzz and click on the Registry category.

    Edtv Vs Hdtv

    Writen by Kenny Hemphill

Confused by EDTV vs HDTV? We don't blame you. The number of acronyms floating about with regard to digital TV is frightening. What's even more worrying is that very often they are used by people who have little or no knowledge about what they mean. If the person selling you doesn't know the difference between EDTV vs HDTV, how are customers supposed to decide which TV or projector to go for?

In our guide below, we've tried to distill the technical info into as few words as possible and make it as straightforward to understand as we can.

To properly explain EDTV vs HDTV, we need to step back a bit. Traditional TV has 525 lines of video which are interlaced. Interlacing just means that every frame of video is split into two fields and each field is shown alternately. Although there are 525 lines in the signal, only 480 lines contain video, so it is sometimes referred to as 480i (480 lines interlaced). This is known as Standard Definition TV, or SDTV. While this has worked well enough for fifty years, as TV sets have got bigger and projectors more popular, the quality deficiencies have become increasingly apparent.

The ultimate answer to improving the quality of the image displayed on your TV is HDTV, however, as a step on the road to HDTV, the industry came up with Enhanced Definition TV, or EDTV. This system contains the same 480 lines as SDTV, but they are progressive scan. Hence EDTV is also known as 480p. Progressive scanning just means that instead of splitting the signal into two fields and showing half the lines at a time, all 480 lines of video are shown at once. This results in a noticeable improvement in the quality of video.

The bad news in relation to EDTV vs HDTV is that you need a completely new TV or projector to display both EDTV and HDTV. Most DVD players on the market today are progressive scan, meaning they output EDTV signals, however, in order to view the progressive scan picture in all its glory, you need a TV or projector capable of displaying it and that, unfortunately, means getting a new TV.

In terms of content, there is very limited TV content available in HDTV format, and there is still wrangling about the standard for HD DVDs. However, every DVD disc on the market can be displayed in EDTV right now.

Bottom line? Pretty much every HDTV projector or TV on the market today will display EDTV as well. So even if you live in a country or area where HDTV content is limited or non-existent, it is worth it to watch your DVD collection in EDTV, the difference between SDTV and EDTV really is that big.

Money And Time Saving Tips For Dvd Replication

    Writen by Shirley Ho

Most people might think that all DVDs are created equal, so why not find the cheapest place you can find? The truth is, not all DVDs are created equal. Never ever just go for the company with the lowest price quote. It cannot be more wrong. The list below serves as a guide on how to find professional duplication / replication services at a reasonable price.

    1. One-stop-shop: By doing the authoring, package design, duplication / replication in one place, you can negotiate a packaged deal, which will in turn save money. Keeping it all in one place will also cut down significant time in shipping and communication back and forth.

    2. Get referrals on services: when you are in a time-crunch, the tendency is to go with the first or cheapest company that you can find. Ask around for referrals because with time and financial constraint, you have less room to risk for errors.

    3. Go local: Working with a company cross country can be quite frustrating because of time zones and shipping times. In a time-critical job, it's better to work with a local company who you can contact and meet face-to-face. Any problems can be resolved faster if you are just a few miles away. Keep in mind that most replication quotes do not include shipping time and charge.

    4. Trust the pros: It might save you a few hundred dollars to author the DVD yourself, or have your roommate do it. Keep in mind that professional authoring houses and replicators do this day in and day out, what they can do in a few days without errors may take you longer to complete. A DVD not properly authored causes more damages than the money you save. This might be the worst decision you can make in order to save money.

    5. The artist's touch: Find someone trustworthy with print experience to design your packaging may make all the difference in retail sales. It is the first thing customers see even before opening the DVD. Make your product stand out among all the competitors. The payoff will definitely be worth the cost. Also remember that a web design may not do well in print and vice versa.

    6. Proof again and again: It takes time whenever changes are to be made to the master and artwork when it is already in production. Printers often charge for additional print proofs and additional stamper is needed if a problem is found in check disc. Either case it delays the schedule and increases the overall project cost. So do yourself a big favor, before you send everything off to the replicator, check all materials thoroughly.

    Unlimited Movie Downloads

    Writen by Kristy Annely

Let's say a man named John Doe has to maintain a rigorous schedule as the marketing chief of a multinational company headquartered in New York. He has little time left to spend his leisure hours watching a Hollywood action film to soothe his nerves. However, through the wonders of modern science, Doe is not deprived of the joys of watching a film despite his busy schedule.

Unlimited movie downloads has made this possible. A mere click of the mouse allows for unlimited movie downloads giving you the opportunity to have unlimited access to the latest movie download software available. It is remarkable in the sense that one is provided with the tools to search and download movies of his or her choice. Unlimited movie downloads usually takes the form of paying a monthly fee.

Unlimited movie downloads have become very popular these days, because it enables individuals to download movies that they wish to see. However, these services on the Internet are not often free. Those that are free should be checked out for legitimacy (bootlegs are both illegal and of lower file quality than approved releases). And as with anything else you download, make sure you scan the file for viruses before downloading.

In the United States, this mode of downloading movies has gained immense popularity. An entire movie (like the mystical thriller Harry Potter), can be downloaded in minutes. Any movie can be downloaded without any time limits, bandwidth limits, or content limits. This is an important aspect of unlimited movie download programs.

    Cheap Dvd R

    Writen by Jimmy Sturo

DVD R is short for DVD Recordable, a technology that works similar to the CD R. The first thing to understand about DVD R is that this you can record data only once on a disk. Once written, the data becomes permanent.

When you work on the computer, you probably find it very convenient to store data on the hard drive. There is enough memory space, and you feel the stored data is safe. But computers, in a way, have a mind of their own. If they should crash, all of your data will be lost. This is where the DVD R comes into the picture, because you can easily make a back up disk of your work. This is possible because of the recording ability of these DVDs.

The added bonus about DVD-Rs is that they are comparatively inexpensive. If you search the net, you will come across many companies offering attractive bargains and discounts on bulk purchases. Normal pricing for blank DVD-R disks range from $10 to $25.

But, don't be carried away by a bargain. The market is flooded with fake DVD-R disks. In most cases, the consumer is never actually sure of the quality of the disks he is buying. Even the name of a brand printed on these disks cannot guarantee the quality. This is because the brand does not actually tell you anything about the manufacturer.

The best way to shop for these disks is by trial and error.

Search the market and you will find that they are available for as little as $1. Buying in bulk, you will find that your DVD player may not recognize all of the disks. Again, the best way to shop for them is by trial and error. The most recommended names in the current market include Sony, Verbatim and Maxell.

Protect Your Privacy By Erasing Tracks Left On Your Computer

    Writen by Richard Rogers

When you browse the web information is continuously collected by the websites you visit and by your own computer. For example, websites at a minimum collect information about the web browser you use the operating system of your computer and the geography you reside from. However, what surprises most users is the amount of information that is collected on your computer from your surfing habits and daily use.

Your web browser stores a lot of different types of information which is designed to improve your internet surfing experience but nevertheless poses a privacy risk. The sites or URLs which you visit are stored in the browser's "history." Search results are saved when you enter a search term into a search engine like Google. Web content and images are stored in the "temp" folder. Files that you download are stored in the download manager.

Websites also place "Cookies" onto your hard drive. A cookie is a small text file and is used by websites to offer advanced features. Some of the information that cookies store include shopping basket items or log-in information for a membership site. Cookies can also store information about when you visited the site including date and time.

Given all this information being collected above you can easily see why this could become a privacy risk. It would not take someone who knew what they were doing too long to figure out what websites you visit, what you have bought online and what search terms you are looking for. This is unfortunately not the end of it.

If you are a user of instant messenger or chat programs like AIM, MSN Instant Messenger or even Skype then it is important to be aware that the programs saves your chat history. Most programs allow you turn this feature off.

There are number of other places besides your web browser where information is stored on your computer. This data can allow people to figure out what you have been doing on your computer. Media players like RealPlayer and Microsoft Media Play store audio and video playing history. Microsoft Office like Excel and PowerPoint applications store information about the most recently accessed files.

Another important thing to remember is that when you delete a file it is not necessarily permanently erased and can be recovered with the right software. When you first hit delete the file is moved to the Recycle Bin. Even when you empty the Recycle Bin the file still exists on your hard drive until Windows overwrites it.

Here are two things you can do to help reduce the privacy risks from your computer.

    - Use a free software tool called "CCleaner" (http://www.ccleaner.com) to clear information collected by your web browser and Windows's Temp Folder. This software automates the manual process of using your browser options menu to clean out cookies, URL history etc. Try to run this tool once a week or more frequently if you are a heavy internet user. - If you work with sensitive data files on your computer then you may want to consider investing in secure file "shredder" software. This type of software actually overwrites or "bleaches" the file you want to delete which means that it cannot be restored.

Computer Lightning Damage How To Prevent It

    Writen by Deborah Baird

    Imagine this:

You leave your home for an extended vacation, taking care to shut all of your appliances and electronic items off. You set your thermostat to an economical reading and make sure that the mail is on hold. You've pretty much covered everything, right?

    Wrong.

    Now, imagine this:

You come home from your extended trip to find that your house has been struck by lightning. Minimal damage has happened to the structure, but you go inside and find that many of your electronic items, including a 3-year-old TV and a $1500 computer have been totally destroyed by the seemingly minor lightning hit!

What happened? You had all these electronics turned off and plugged into surge protectors, why did they get damaged so badly?

The telltale words in the previous sentence should give you a clue: 'plugged into'. This assumes that the surge protectors themselves were still plugged into the wall … and they were.

    Could this really happen?

    Absolutely!

This is an actual account from one of our clients who left their Florida home for a month to visit the kids and grandkids. When they returned, they found all of the damage to their electronic equipment throughout the house. Luckily, they had good insurance and the items were replaced.

But getting a new computer is not like getting a new TV, where you take the TV out of the box and plug it into the wall and turn it on. It takes a lot of time to set up a new computer and reconfigure the software as well as take the backed up data and restore it to the new computer. I made a good amount of money that day but learned a great lesson that I will pass on to you.

First of all, if you have important data on your computer, back it up. If you don't know how to do it, find a good technician or at least a friend who knows how to help you. Backing up data just means that you make a copy of the information that you work with on a regular basis on your computer, whether it is pictures or financial information or a book that you are writing … whatever is important to you, needs to have a copy that resides off of the computer.

This client found out the hard way just how important it is to create these backup data discs, and was very grateful that she did! Programs that run on your machine can be replaced, but the data that you create with the program cannot be replaced, unless you have a copy of it!

Secondly, when you leave the house for any length of time and there is a chance that a thunderstorm will arrive near your building, you must shut down your computer and any electronic devices … if you want them to survive the storm.

And, to absolutely play it safe, even if your devices are plugged into a surge protector and they are shut off … unplug the surge protector from the wall socket.

That little act will save you from tons of costly grief! During thunderstorm season in the spring and summer, I shut off and unplug every computer that we have running at the office, as well as any other important electronic item that I don't want damaged.

I hope you do the same!

    10 Most Common Ipod Repairs

    Writen by Ruben Soliman

The greatest advantage and disadvantage of an iPod is its small shape. For such a small gadget, the iPod holds can hold thousands of mp3 files. With its portability, the increase of mishaps is sure to happen. From common scratches to hard drive problems, an iPod's biggest selling point can also be its greatest drawback.

Detailed below are the most common repair issues:

    1. Getting Dropped: It's as easy as giving it to someone to look at or even slipping out of your pocket. Dropping an iPod can happen anytime. This can result in minor aesthetic issues that can be ignored or to greater hard drive issues that have to be sent to a specialist for repair.

    2. Getting Scratched: Scratching an iPod is as easy as scratching a cell phone. With its increased daily use, the iPod is not just used on occasion, but is a regular accessory.

    3. Falling in Water: How many times have you dropped your cell in phone in water? Nowadays, dropping an iPod in water can happen just as easy.

    4. Exposure to Extreme Weather Conditions: Depending on where you live, weather conditions can affect your iPod. From the large amount of rain in Seattle to the snowy weather in the NorthEast, or even the blazing sun in the South, any harsh weather condition can affect your iPod and can cause needed repairs.

    5. Dirt: With regular use, dirt can accumulate in the iPod. Cleaning is needed in many cases.

    6. Bending: Even though there is an increase in clothing designers catering to the iPod user by designing storage units in many jackets, shirts and pants, bending and cracking can happen. Many people keep their iPods in their back pockets and mishaps can happen when sitting.

    7. Broken Screens: One of the leading repairs is LCD repair. Breaking or cracking of the screen can happen in so many ways, accidentally or even with just normal use.

    8. Hard Drives: The most costly repair is the hard drive. For whatever reason, these gadgets can stop working like normal. A hard drive upgrade or replacement may be needed.

    9. Headphone Sockets: With continual use, the headphone socket may become loose or even broken. Repair is needed since it is the source for listening.

    10. Battery: With time, the battery life may become too short or even have battery malfunctions. A battery upgrade may be needed.

These are just some of the problems you may face with an iPod. With care and forward thinking, many of these can be limited. To lessen iPod repair issues, be sure to use a protective case and use care and caution.

    Computer Lessons Learned

    Writen by Carol Bremner

Keep a computer journal - every time you have a problem, write it and the solution down. When the same problem comes up again (which it often does), you know what to do. With a memory like mine, this has saved me a lot of time and money.

If something doesn't work, check the obvious first. For example, my printer stopped working, so I checked the program, re-installed the software, re-booted the computer, but nothing worked. Then I realized that the printer cable had come just a little bit loose. Not enough to notice, but enough to stop the power.

My hard drive at work got slower and slower, then totally died. I didn't realize that hard drives were capable of that and it reminded me again of the importance of saving my data to a disk or cd.

I received an official looking email at work, claiming to come from administration. It was a zipped file, so I downloaded it. Later I found out it was a virus. Lesson- just because the name on an email looks official doesn't mean it is, so be careful about opening files or giving out personal information, especially charge card details.

I was painting the kitchen and wasn't sure if the previous paint was latex or oil based. So I went onto the Internet, asked Jeeves (www.askjeeves.com) and found out how. Answer: apply a cloth dampened in denatured alcohol and latex will bubble or wipe off.

Found out that URL is pronounced earl. I would never have known that and it sounds really funny.

Every day lately, I've been getting emails about seminars and new products that I would love to buy and attend, but I'd have to be a millionaire first. How do people decide what to focus on? I read that you should find one or two people on the net that you admire and concentrate on learning from them.

I read an article about training your brain. Every day you should learn one new thing and then think about what you learned right before you go to bed. Then when you get up the next morning, think about what you learned again. This is supposed to re-inforce whatever it is that was learned. I'll have to try it with my learning Spanish. I'm having a hard time remembering more than two phrases and saying "I'm going to the washroom" and "goodbye" don't get a conversation going very far.

My newest gadget and birthday present is a little label printer and it's so cute. I wasn't sure if I would use it that much, but it came in very handy. I'm having a baby shower for my daughter and rather than wreck my wrist writing (say that quickly), I printed off the address on labels and pasted them on the invitations. They look nice and saved a lot of time and effort. Next I'll do the envelope labels and I'll be all set. I didn't like doing labels with my regular printer because it was so fiddly getting the data nicely centered. But this little printer does them perfectly every time and I can add little pictures, print all different sizes, and like I said before, it's so cute.

Selecting The Perfect Big Screen Tv

    Writen by Simon Canfield

Selecting a TV isn't as easy as it used to be in years gone by. Rather than going to the local department store and choosing a console that would take up a large portion of the living room, we now have other options. Along with those options comes the chore of locating, comparing and narrowing down a multitude of models to just the right one for your viewing needs.

First, of course, you'll need to consider the size of the room which will house the unit. Since Big Screen TVs offer a much larger viewing scenario, the room needs to be able to accommodate whichever model you choose. For instance, you might like the idea of a 60" screen, but you might only have enough space to accommodate one that measures 42". Don't make the mistake of purchasing one and then discovering that, as much as you thought you might be able to squeeze it into the room, it just won't work.

Display type is another consideration when bringing such a system into your home. You'll need to choose a glass tube or flat tube (the latter being the more expensive). For higher viewing quality, you'd be better off with the flat tube variety. Direct-views are smaller with a brighter picture and wider viewing angle than their larger rear-projection counterparts. If you prefer the rear-projection variety, however, they range in size from 40 to 82 inches diagonally. Those who like the idea of such a large picture – and have the room to house such a unit – will be happy with the 82" variety.

Next, you'll have to decide whether you prefer SDTD (Standard Definition Television), EDTV (Enhanced Definition Television) or HDTV (High Definition TV). The STD is really nothing more than the usual type of television that has been in homes across America for years. The enhanced version is an upscale of that, but doesn't quite offer the quality of the HDTV variety. HDTV offers high definition viewing, and is touted as being the best viewing experience that there is to offer to the general public.

Financial considerations are always on the horizon, and this will be one of the biggest factors that you'll need to consider when determining which type of set to purchase. Although the EDTV and HDTV models carry weightier price tags, they also pay for themselves over the long run, if you consider how much money you'd be spending to go to the local cinema on a regular basis. If your budgetary constraints are so tight that you can't even consider such an option, then you can still find standard televisions which utilize the big screen TV presentation.

The bottom line is that you'll need to consider finances, available space in the room, type of viewing presentation, display capabilities and the reputation of the manufacturer. Manufacturers such as Sony, Pioneer and Panasonic are among the highest ranked manufacturers of TV and big screen TV systems in the current market. Others also have a strong reputation for quality, as well, so it's simply going to be a matter of doing a bit of comparison shopping.

How To Buy A Plasma Television Set

    Writen by Tom Ace

Most people think that all you have to do to purchase a new plasma television set is to walk into a shop, look around, and purchase the first set that catches your attention. This is how you're supposed to do it, right? Wrong! Buying a television, whether it has a plasma monitor or a LCD monitor, takes careful planning.

The first step in finding your dream plasma television set is to measure the space where you plan to put it. This will help you to decide which size set to buy and will also help to guide your budget. Remember to measure your car, too- there's nothing more frustrating than picking out and purchasing that perfect plasma television set, if you can't fit it into the car to get it home!

If you're going to splash out and completely redecorate your home entertainment room, you should think about contacting a home installer, to get some tips and ideas before contracting the work. Remember to take into consideration things which might affect your view of the TV, such as lighting, windows, and other parts of the room which could possibly cause a reflection or obstruction of the display.

Once you've thought about where you're going to put your new plasma television set- and how you're going to get it home- you now need to think about what sort accessories you'll need. Will you be using it in conjunction with your camcorder? Will you need to purchase a set of external speakers, or will you be hooking the television set up to your stereo? If so, remember to check that the monitor or set has an AV-hook up. Having the hook up in the front of the TV will make it more convenient to attach your camcorder or gaming system.

Finally, you should consider the television set's overall picture quality and ease of use. Take the time to sit and watch the set in the store, to get an idea of how you'll feel watching it at home.

With a little preparation, you'll find the plasma TV set that is just right for you and your home.

How To Export A Microsoft Access Report As A Pdf

    Writen by Chris Le Roy

Microsoft Access is one of the most awesome prototyping tools anyone in software development could ever use, however there are also some really serious downsides as well. I know the software purists will be rolling over in their graves with my comments but after 20 plus years of commercial software development for some of the worlds largest companies I stand by my comments.

Microsoft Access makes it very easy and very cost effective to develop a database application and then roll it out onto the desktop. One of the downsides to this application is that it has always been incredibly difficult to export reports from Microsoft Access to another format. Most Microsoft Access developers that I know who build these systems use third party applications to export reports like Crystal Reports or Microsoft Word. The downside to using Microsoft Word is that you cannot export OLE Objects, using the merge process, you actually have to use VBA Code in Microsoft Word to call the ole object via ADO. Well that is one technique anyway. Now, with Adobe Acrobat Writer Version 7 we now have a new more effective method.

The exporting of OLE Objects has always been a major downside to Microsoft Access and Microsoft Word, but I was recently working with Adobe Acrobat writer Version 7 and I found that this version of the software now installs itself in all major Microsoft Office Applications. This is a fantastic step forward for Microsoft Access developers as this mean you can develop a report exclusively in Microsoft Access and then print the report straight to a PDF Format, rather than first going to Microsoft Word document then converting it into a Adobe Acrobat PDF File. The other key advantage is that if you are using a OLE Object Datatype in a Report, the Adobe PDF file will accept that data type and show a picture if that is what you are looking for. Alot of my clients have wanted to use Microsoft Access to develop reports that include photos and distribute them using Microsoft Word but up until now that has been able to be done easily. (Without using extensive VBA Code) Adobe Acrobat 7 allows us to create a pdf file from a report with OLE Objects and include them as photos etc within the PDF File. This means organisations that want to distribute staff files or product descriptions can create them using Microsoft Access. First of all they create the descriptions as a report and then convert them to PDF Format using Adobe Acrobat Writer.

Adobe has provided two ways to generate your PDF report. First off it installs an Adobe Drop Down Menu into the Microsoft Access main menu bar and from this drop down menu you can then choose to create the report as an ADOBE PDF. Note you must open the report first. You can even use this menu function to create the report and then email it direct to a third party. I think this feature alone is worth the $700AUD you pay for Adobe Acrobat Writer.

The second method is to open your report and then choose the File menu and then Print. The Print dialog box will open and then you choose Adobe Acrobat writer as the Printer and then choose the OK button which will then start Adobe Acrobat and generate your PDF.

With this new method to build a PDF file, you can even use Visual Basic for Access to automate the print process and then email the file using MAPI or CDO. If you are one of those people who like to use macro's over using VBA there is no way that I can find where you can achieve this. If you could find someone who could create a module for you that automates this process you could use a macro then by calling the Function in the module from the macro window. All this of course is dependent on finding the write person to write that function. I have not done this directly, because I have been using a form with VBA Code to automate the creation of the PDF and then email it via CDO.

One of the questions I get asked a lot, especially by people from GLobal Organisations who need to write monthly reports,"Would it be possible to automate this process and have the reports email themselves once a month". The answer to this is, ABSOLUTELY YES! The catch though is you would need to leave Microsoft Access open on a machine and then have a developer to write some code that acts like a timer and then once the computer clock ticks over the Form could simply create the associated reports and email them via MAPI. This seems complex all in all but for a competent VBA programmer, there should not be any problems doing this.

When Microsoft Office 2007 is released in 2007(hopefully), Microsoft has said that they will be including the functionality for producing PDF files from within Microsoft Office 2007, hopefully this functionality will be included for Microsoft Access 2007, which means in the next version, MACRO developers maybe able to export direct to PDF Format and then email direct to clients. If Microsoft does offer this in their new version, this to me would be the major reason I would recommend all companies upgrade to this new version. I wait in hope that this will be the case.

    The System Development Life Cycle

    Writen by Michael Hart

    [1] Identification of problems:

The proposal to develop a the new information system started with a formal request resulting from the identification of existing problems identified in the current systems used in the mail order and wholesales business operations.

Using the scenario information which provides details of the current installation, the areas of the companies operations to be redefined can be categorised into one of three areas., The opportunities for introduction of Information systems and technology are in this case not the objective of the business process re-engineering, but are more a by-product. These are as follows:

Information is an organizational resource which must be managed as carefully as other resources. Costs are associated with information processing.

    [2]Feasibility study:

The need for a new system is clearly defined in the problem identification stage of the process. As identified by the clients, many of the company's systems that support the procedures have not been modified for many years. Others are regularly maintained. In order to improve productivity, it has been decided to re-engineer some of the core business processes. When two separate functions are performed by different people, the existence of two separate transaction processing computer systems, operated at two different terminals is not seen as a problem. In the proposed system one operative will be performing one new business function and obviously the one terminal and one computer system should support the new function.

[3] Information gathering on the proposed system:

For each application identified as a candidate for redesign, as identified during the problem definition stage, the process associated with each was investigated in detail to determine the advantages and disadvantages of its operation, its running cost, overall effectiveness, how the problems came about, and the detailed functional and technical system requirements necessary for the current system to achieve its results.

A detailed definition of the systems' functional operations and the flow of information in relation it is passed between organisational functions as follows here in an example:

    a} Customer places order:

The customer places an order at your site, using their payment method of choice. When a customer places an order or requests a catalogue, information associated with the transaction is collected. This information required in fulfilling the order or catalogue request includes the customer's name, mailing address, products ordered, shipping addresses, and credit card information. The information is stored on our customer file in a completely secure environment.

    b) Sales:

Customer orders received by a sales function are passed to an accounts function for processing and invoicing as well as to stores for despatch of goods.

    c) Customer Order Processing:

This includes all the activities related to processing of customer orders and inventory control in an organization, under the current system an order-entry clerk would directly enter any order by way of a keyboard,.

Processing can streamline the order management cycle and improve customer service and satisfaction This function handles: Perform online credit check, maintain accurate records, advise customers of order status and item availability, direct dispatch of goods and issue invoices promptly. Sales Analysis and history features provide a valuable tool for management.

    d) Invoicing:

This function is responsible for the production of customer invoices, requesting payment for goods or services delivered. Information generated by this function (about the customers and stock) is stored and is used to produce invoices, usually on pre-printed continuous stationery.

To charge the customer the accounting function requires the necessary sales information, which is supplied by the sales function.

    e) Accounting:

Financial accounting is the process of documenting the financial transactions resulting from the activities of an organisation almost all of which generate materials of this nature. This function also acts as a control mechanism over the financial transactions of a business. Accounting records can than be analysed to provide information on the performance of a business over a period.

    f) Payroll: Payroll systems are concerned with the production of payslip for employees and maintenance of records required for taxation and other deductions. In a manual system the preparation of payroll figures and the maintenance of payroll records is an intensive task. Although tedious and repetitive, it is a vitally important task.

    g) Transaction Processing:
Easy entry of customer orders including copy of previous orders, partial shipping and billing and automatic release of back ordered items for shipping upon receipt

    h) Query open orders:
Drill down to shipping information on line items, customer order history, including current, year-to-date, or all, customer, credit files, stock Files:

    i) Returns Files:

Returned or damaged merchandise handling, return merchandise authorization credit note generation and automatically generated accounting entries.

    j) Payments and receipts:

These may relate to sales orders or purchase orders. Receipts are amounts received from debtors. Payments are made by a business to settle debts with creditors (suppliers to the business).

    [4] System analysis:

The current business systems are operating on fundamental principles developed in the foundation of the company. The restructuring of its procedures to enable centralised support operations and planning. Many of these are legacy systems for management of stock, order, returns and account files for keeping track of individual customer accounts, returned goods, and payments; it also needs to have information on stock levels transferred to a single relational database system.

The way in which commercial transactions are conducted will be directly effected be the fundamental change in the shift towards the importance of information exchange that is not intrinsically part of the current computer based applications to facilitate business processes, new systems to capture information on customers

    [5] Design of the system:

The potential systems subsystems, functional and technical component parts must be reevaluated to determine how the system is to meet the requirements identified at the analysis phase. Coding (if required) the information system would take place then testing and debugging.

In this instance a prototype system should be run in a simulated operational environment with real staff but test data which would not affect the real operation of the old system still continuing, and would allow the system to be tested safely and adequately on the sample data as well as the people who will have to make it work in future.

    [6] Implementation and evaluation:

Once the evaluation stage has been completed, all lessons learned should be incorporated, and a final evaluation made to check this has been carried out.

First installation and operation on real data of the new equipment and software to form the complete system should take place at a single non-mission critical site for further testing until all subsystems work as intended.

Staff training should have been happening throughout, to the extent that staff had been involved in the evaluation stages, but the training of the remainder can start at this stage using this non critical site as the 'school'. The new information system should be run in parallel with the previous operations of the company until the new system is working effectivity, to ensure that the operation can continue to function if the system runs into unforseen complications at this late stage.

Parallel implementation should be must effective in this situation as this is the safest option where both the old and the new systems operate simultaneously and the results of the old system are used as a benchmark; which can be compared against the results of the new system to determine the reliability and accuracy of the new system.

    [7] Maintenance:

The performance of the new system should be monitored by the installation team for the first weeks of its operation to establish if there are any unforseen failings in the design of operational procedures and whether it addresses all the original requirements. Before the installation team log off they should put in place the continuing monitoring systems to be operated by the company's staff, and any necessary back - up / technical support service.

Formal updates to keep management and the operations staff involved must be conducted at each stage during the system design, development, test, and implementation phases.

Ip Addresses Finding Understanding And Using

    Writen by Adam Knife

IP addresses are like real-world addresses, they are identifiers for computers or devices connected to TCP/IP networks. The entire TCP/IP networking protocol is based on the concept of a unique IP address for every object connected to the network. Messages sent via TCP/IP networks are routed to their destination based on the IP address.

IP addresses have a fairly simple format. They are made of four octets (8 bits), separated by periods. An octet can be from 0-255 (the first octet cannot be 0), with the exception of a few 'reserved' patterns (127.0.0.1 should always resolve to the local machine).

Private networks, such as internal LANs can have any IP addresses they want as long as each is unique, however, to connect to the public and regulated Internet, you will need to use a registered IP address (distributed by the various Internet registries: ARIN, RIPE, etc.)

The number of available addresses in an IPv4 set up is slightly over 4,000,000,000, however, around 20,000,000 are reserved for special uses such as private networks. As more and more users and objects (with the VoIP revolution, as well as kitchens and cars becoming more and more connective, this problem will continue to become more severe) we are quickly closing in on the maximum number of IP addresses available. Thus, IPv6 was devised.

IPv6 uses significantly longer addresses: being 128 bits wide, IPv6 addresses can have 2128 different addresses, or according to Wikipedia: "If the earth were made entirely out of 1 cubic millimeter grains of sand, then you could give a unique address to each grain in 300 million planets the size of the earth."

On to actually finding your IP address… there are various ways to do it, and each can be "wrong" for the actual IP address you are looking for. Many people do not connect directly to the Internet, some go through corporate proxies, some go through server provider "compressing" or caching proxies, and many use proxies for other reasons. This makes finding an IP address significantly more difficult than one would expect.

Sites such as WhatIsMyIP.com provide an output of what that server sees as your IP. This works perfectly if you are not going through any external devices, however, if your Internet access is routed through a proxy, there's a good chance that WhatIsMyIP will show the proxy address, rather than your own, personal address.

On Windows 95 and 98 users may run the executable "winipcfg.exe" (to do this, go Start->Run then enter winipcfg.exe), which will show information about their connection. IP addresses consisting primarily of 255s, 0s, 1s, 192s, or 128s are likely masks or internal addresses, not the external address you are interested in finding.

On Windows NT/XP users may run ipconfig.exe, however, this is no longer a graphical program. To do this, you must run a command prompt (Start->Run->cmd.exe) then type ipconfig.exe within the command prompt. This will give you a range of output regarding your current connection information. For more help, run ipconfig.exe /? for a help output.

Depending on the Linux distro (and various other things), Linux users may run `ifconfig -a` at a terminal for networking information.

Get Out Of The Stone Age

    Writen by Jason Montag

If you have visited your local electronics retailer lately, I'm sure you felt like I do when I go in, completely overwhelmed. Every day more and more products flood the marketplace and it seems like a never ending array of features and options. On bad days, I walk around in a daze stupidly staring at the signs and reading the descriptions that I don't understand. On good days, I bribe one of my tech geek friends to accompany me and translate into English what all those options actually mean.

My latest shopping expeditions have been for a navigational system. I am getting ready to move to another state and decided that I would be proactive and get the system before I get there so that I have time to learn how to use it. That would be a great idea if I could figure out which one to buy. Dozens of brands, dozens of options and a huge price range make it nearly impossible to make a decision. I have learned the hard way that its not always best to buy the cheapest electronic possible but I also don't have unlimited funds to buy the nicest one either. Finding some middle ground would be nice but how do you know what options you need until you've actually owned one and seen how it works?

So far, internet research has been my biggest help. My husband laughs at me for spending time pouring over online reviews and retailers websites trying to find a machine that suits me, but I need to feel confident that my money was well spent and that I got the best price available to me. Naturally, two weeks after I choose the prices will probably drop another fifty dollars, but unfortunately that is the nature of the beast. Electronics are getting faster, smarter and cheaper every day but you have to take that plunge some time.

Turn Your Pc Into A Tv Watch Tv Online

    Writen by Albert Lee

Combining PC and TV seems to be next phase in technology. Those who don't have time to stay at home can watch their favorite tv shows online.

Here are some concerns that people might have which are worth mentioning.

    - Many do not believe that this is legal but the truth is, it is. To be able to access these stations which number more than 3,000, all the individual needs is to download the software that the developers made from the Internet.

    - The channels available feature shopping, entertainment, news, cartoons and just about anything else a viewer could imagine. Just to give an example, those who love sports such as soccer or basketball have over 50 to select. Those who are tired of watching MTV or music television can switch over to the other 29 channels.

    - The user will just pay a one time fee and that's it. Some consider this to be a better bargain than satellite TV that will charge the customer for the monthly maintenance of the unit.

    - Because of the technology available to make this happen, the person can watch shows from any part of the world. All the user has to do is select the show and country of origin to begin getting live feed.

    - Those who developed this took over three years to complete. People who are concerned of getting spyware, adware or viruses should not worry because it is checked often to prevent any of these from entering the system.

    - Though it does not have yet the technology to record shows that are missed for the viewer to catch later, people should not be surprised should this happen less than a year or two from now.

    - There is no need to worry if the user doesn't have the latest operating system for the laptop or desktop. This is because the software used is compatible for those from Windows 95 all the way to the latest which is XP.
